Declaration of Principles issued at the end of National Conference "Towards Building a Sudanese Model for Transitional Justice"

At the conclusion of the National Conference "Towards Building a Sudanese Model for Transitional Justice", which was held in the Friendship Hall at the Sudanese capital, Khartoum, from 16 to 20 March 2023, the participants identified 16 principles, including strict adherence to the objectives of transitional justice which are manifested in ending the culture of impunity; the rule of law; putting an end to human rights violations; building trust between communities and the State; restoring the dignity of the victims and their families, providing reparations; and reforming state institutions, justice bodies, and security and military bodies.

They stressed that the ideal means for democratic transformation, political stability, and the rule of law lay in the availability of political will, communal acceptance, legislative and judicial measures, and an active role for civil society towards turning the pages of the past by holding human rights violators accountable; developing measures to achieve justice, accountability, redress; uncovering the truth; reparation; and preparing the climate so crimes do not be repeated in the future and for a comprehensive reconciliation to be achieved based on non-impunity, redress and justice.
