Statement from Mr. Volker Perthes, UNITAMS' SRSG, on the formation of the new Government in Sudan

Statement from Mr. Volker Perthes, Special Representative of the Secretary-General to Sudan and Head of United Nations Integrated Transition Assistance Mission in Sudan (UNITAMS) on the formation of the new Government.

Khartoum, 9 February

On behalf of the United Nations in Sudan, I congratulate Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok on the formation of the new Government, as well as the Sovereignty Council and Cabinet members on their appointments.  I wish them courage and success in their common commitment to Sudan’s path toward political transition, peace and economic development.

The inclusion of the partners to the Juba Peace Agreement is an important milestone in the political transition and a step forward towards realizing tangible and inclusive peace.

I welcome Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok’s and all the transitional partners’ commitment to establishing an inclusive Transitional Legislative Council by 25 February, with the meaningful representation of women as expressed in the Constitutional Declaration.

UNITAMS and the entire UN family look forward to working closely with the new Government, the Sovereignty Council, transitional institutions and civil society partners in their efforts to overcome the challenges facing the country, and we encourage all parties to engage constructively towards comprehensive peace and development for the Sudanese people.
