UNOAU: Women, Peace and Security

UNOAU’s women, peace and security work promotes the full, equal and meaningful participation of women in peace and security across the UN–AU partnership. It supports inclusive peace processes, provides technical advice on gender-responsive policy and practice, and strengthens institutional capacity for gender-sensitive analysis and decision-making.

The Office works closely with the African Union Commission and the Regional Economic Communities and Regional Mechanisms to promote gender-responsive conflict analysis, policy development and programming. This includes building the capacity of women in peacebuilding and peace support operations, supporting intergenerational dialogue and documenting women’s contributions to peace and security across the continent.

UNOAU ensures that gender is systematically mainstreamed across all areas of its work, including mediation support, conflict prevention, capacity-building and political engagement. The Office also advances the UN–AU commitment to institutionalize gender-responsive policymaking and champions the leadership and participation of women in preventive diplomacy, mediation and peacebuilding.
